This is a great article on the state of virtualization at this point in time and what devices are adopting virtualization. Virtualization of desktops may be a better way to manage costs as far as hardware, management and downtime. Your desktop machine life cycle could double due to desktop virtualization depending on how it is implemented. I think desktop virtualization is still in its early stages but is definitely a way to look lowering management costs in the future.
