There’s such a different mood in the Fall & Winter when it’s dark as you leave the office. Now it’s colder so fireplaces are cracklin’, everyone is bundled up and nature goes into hibernation for a few months. However, my family seems to spend more time together being indoors more. Of course we are all on the computer more too – shopping for the holidays, reading blogs, socializing via Facebook (especially my kids), and watching video. The internet has really changed the world and continues to amaze me as it connects people and businesses. While it is certainly exciting, it can get confusing and even overwhelming. But inside the Beacon office, things are buzzing. Members of our web marketing team just returned from the Google Analytics conference at Google in CA where they met with Google staff and other GAACs (Google Analytics Authorized Consultants) from around the world. Another group just returned from the Web Master World Conference (Pubcon) in Las Vegas, where thousands of web marketers share information and practices. Another group returned from the AspDotNetStorefront eCommerce Developers Conference in Vegas too, where they honed their skills and gained insights and new information on the Storefront product that we can share with our clients. And yet another group returned from the Hannon Hill Cascade Server CMS User’s Conference in Atlanta, where Justin Klingman (Beacon’s Web Design & CMS Manager) was a guest speaker. It may be cold outside, but Web Marketing is hot right now, particularly as we expand our offering into social media (Twitter LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Blogs, etc.) and video production. A/B Testing is blazing right now as our clients reach for even better ROI from their website using Google Website Optimizer. And eCommerce is smokin’ as the cost of entry has come down drastically while still providing high-end features. Lastly, Content Management (CMS) is hotter than ever as businesses, especially higher education, demand to manage their own content with dependable, industrial strength content management software. Couple all this with Beacon’s offering of virtual dedicated hosting and the advent of cloud computing, and I can certainly understand why there’s a new level of excitement within the Beacon offices. So enjoy time with your family during this Fall and Holiday Season and let us know if we can warm up your business! Mark Dirks, President |

St. Mary’s College of Maryland Takes Control When you work for the admissions department of a unique honors college surrounded by the St. Mary’s River, you need a content management system that works as fast as the whitewater around you. Beacon is implementing an HTML template redesign based on the school’s existing graphical mockups by upgrading St. Mary’s to Cascade Server CMS. Launched live in early November, this new system will offer admissions administrators complete control of almost 200 pages of online content. Last year, The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC), the state agency that supports, improves and promotes library services throughout the Commonwealth, hired Beacon to host and transition their website to Hannon Hill’s Cascade Server CMS. This summer to raise awareness of the state aid to public libraries and the Annual Report Information Survey, MBLC turned to Beacon again, but this time to develop a custom-designed blog that matches their current website using the same WordPress publishing platform the NC-based tech company uses for its Beacon Blog. NC Technology Association Ready for The FutureOn the heels of hiring a new CEO, the North Carolina Technology Association (NCTA), a statewide membership organization that represents the technology industry, worked with Beacon’s creative services department to redesign their website to be more member-interactive and consulted with Beacon’s Google Analytics experts on how to make its structure more SEO-friendly. | Link Love. Create a community of related sites that link to each other. Why stop at only one information page? The more content-rich sites that point to your site, the better. You can also boost the number of links that point to your site by dividing it into several separate sites that all link to each other. This works especially well if you sell a number of different products or services. If you build a different site to focus on each of your products and services, then you can also concentrate the use of specific keyword phrases on each site. That’s another great way to boost your search engine ranking.
Are You Listening? Companies are now turning to technology-driven, real-time voice of the customer (VOC) programs. VOC programs involve gathering, managing and leveraging customer feedback and actively responding to that feedback. These solutions allow businesses to continually funnel customer and employee feedback from multiple channels (email, Web, print, phone) into a central database for analysis and immediate action. |
